Were Adam and Eve really the first people to exist?

If so them where did cain's wife come from? In genesis 4v14 after being thrown out of the garden, wat does cain mean when he says "today u r driving me from the land and I will be hidden frm ur presence. I will be a restless wanderer on earth and whoever finds me will kill me? Where were these people he was afraid wud find him coming from??
